Sika Sikaflex Tank N FAQs

What is Sikaflex Tank N and where is it used?

Sikaflex Tank N is a 1-component, moisture-curing, elastic polyurethane joint sealant designed for sealing joints in containment areas where water-polluting liquids are stored, filled or handled. Typical applications include floor joints in petrol stations, joints in fuel and chemical handling areas, storage tanks and containment bunds, movement and connection joints in parking garages, and joints in liquid-proof concrete structures. It holds technical approval for use in storage, filling and handling facilities for water-polluting liquids in accordance with ETA-09/0272 and is suitable for use with concrete grades C35/C45 to C50/60. It must only be used by professional applicators.

What substrates is Sikaflex Tank N compatible with, and are there any it cannot be used on?

Sikaflex Tank N is suitable for concrete, aerated concrete, cement-based renders, mortars, bricks, aluminium and anodised aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel, powder-coated metals and glazed tiles. It should not be used on natural stone without first contacting Sika Technical Services, and must not be used on bituminous substrates, natural rubber, EPDM rubber, glass or materials that may bleed oils or plasticisers. It is also not suitable for sealing swimming pools.

Which primer is required for Sikaflex Tank N?

Primer requirements depend on the substrate. For porous substrates such as concrete, aerated concrete, mortars and brick, prime with Sika Primer-215 or Sika Primer-3 N applied by brush or roller. Allow a flash-off time of more than 30 minutes but no longer than 8 hours before applying the sealant. For non-porous substrates such as aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel and powder-coated metals, pre-treat with Sika Aktivator-205 wiped on with a clean cloth, allowing a flash-off time of more than 15 minutes but no longer than 6 hours. For copper, brass and titanium-zinc, apply Sika Aktivator-205 first, then follow with Sika Primer-3 N after the flash-off time, allowing a further 30 minutes before sealing. Primers are adhesion promoters and cannot substitute for correct surface preparation and thorough cleaning.

How is Sikaflex Tank N applied?

Sikaflex Tank N is supplied ready to use. After substrate preparation and priming, insert a closed-cell polyethylene foam backing rod to the required depth. Insert the cartridge into the sealant gun and extrude the sealant into the joint, ensuring full contact with both sides of the joint and avoiding air entrapment. Firmly tool the sealant against the joint sides to ensure adequate adhesion. Do not use tooling products containing solvents. Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with Sika Remover-208 or Sika TopClean T – cured material can only be removed mechanically. Colour variation may occur in service due to exposure to chemicals, UV or high temperatures, particularly in white or light shades, but this does not affect technical performance.

What is the shelf life of Sikaflex Tank N?

The shelf life is 12 months from the date of production in original, unopened and undamaged sealed packaging. Store in dry conditions at temperatures between +5°C and +25°C. Refer to the current Safety Data Sheet for full handling, storage and disposal guidance.
