Sika Setting Sand FAQs

What is Sika Setting Sand and where can it be used?

Sika Setting Sand is a moisture-curing jointing material for narrow paving joints. It is designed to be poured or swept into the joints, then activated with water so it sets hard in place. It is suitable for all types of block paving and can be used on footpaths, patios, pedestrian areas, indoor stone floor areas and driveways with light vehicular traffic.

What joint sizes is Sika Setting Sand suitable for?

Sika Setting Sand is made for joints between 2mm and 5mm wide, with a minimum joint depth of 25mm. The product should fill the full depth of the joint, rather than just the top surface, and the joints should not be prefilled with another sand beforehand. Using it within the correct joint size range is important for proper curing and long-term performance.

How do you apply Sika Setting Sand?

The paving should be dry, clean and free from dust, grease, oil and loose debris before application. The product should be remixed in the bag before use, then poured or swept into the joints in small sections until they are filled. Once the joints are full, the area should be thoroughly soaked with water using a hose on a spray setting or a watering can with a rose. Any excess left on the paving surface should be brushed away straight away to help avoid residue once the product hardens.

When should Sika Setting Sand not be used?

It should not be used if rain is expected before the joints have had time to harden, or when temperatures are 5°C or below. It is also not the right choice for areas with poor drainage or where water is likely to sit in the joints for long periods. The paving and joint base should be well drained so the product can perform properly over time.

How long does Sika Setting Sand take to dry and when can the area be used?

The surface will usually dry in around 1 to 2 days depending on weather conditions, while full cure can take up to 28 days. The area can normally be walked on straight after activation, although it is still best to allow the joints time to dry properly before heavier use. High-pressure washing should be avoided for at least 28 days, and once cured, the nozzle should be kept at a slight distance from the joints to help protect the finish.

Why choose Sika Setting Sand?

Once cured, Sika Setting Sand sets hard and is designed not to crack, shrink or wash out. It also helps resist weeds and insects, making it a stronger and lower-maintenance option than loose jointing sand. It weathers naturally with the paving for a more consistent finished look, which makes it a practical choice for both domestic and light-use commercial paved areas.
