What Self-Levelling Compounds Are Used For

Self-levelling compound is a flowable mix used to smooth uneven floors and fill dips, creating a flat surface ready for the final finish.

Common uses include preparing floors for:

  • Tiles and stone
  • Vinyl and lino
  • Carpet
  • Laminate and timber

It is especially useful before tiling, where a level base helps reduce the risk of cracked tiles and lipping (uneven tile edges).

Types of Self-Levelling Compound

Self-levelling compounds come in different formats depending on the job:

  • Water-mix compounds that are mixed with clean water on site for general smoothing and levelling
  • Polymer or latex-modified compounds for stronger adhesion and a small degree of movement tolerance in the subfloor
  • Rapid-setting options for quicker return to service when timelines are tight
  • Heavy-duty levellers for tougher environments, typically used as part of a suitable flooring system

FAQs

What is self-levelling compound?

Self-levelling compound is a cement-based smoothing material that flows across the floor to fill low spots and reduce surface irregularities. It is used to create a flatter, more consistent base before installing floor finishes like tiles, vinyl, laminate, carpet, or timber. It is not usually a finished surface on its own, it is a preparation layer designed to improve the performance and appearance of the final floor.

Do I need a primer before applying self-levelling compound?

In many cases, yes. Primer helps the levelling compound bond properly to the substrate and reduces suction from porous surfaces like concrete or sand and cement screed. Without primer, the compound can dry too quickly at the surface, which can lead to pinholing, poor flow, weak adhesion, or cracking. Primer also helps create a more consistent finish, especially where the floor has patches of different materials or absorption levels.

Can self-levelling compound be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, many self-levelling compounds are suitable for use over underfloor heating because they create a smooth layer that supports even heat distribution. The key is choosing a compound rated for use with UFH and following the correct process, including priming, minimum thickness guidance, and allowing proper curing time before heating is switched on. Heating should normally be brought up gradually after curing to reduce the risk of shrinkage or cracking.

How long does self-levelling compound take to dry?

Drying times vary depending on the product type, thickness applied, temperature, humidity, and the absorbency of the subfloor. Some fast-drying compounds can be walked on in a few hours and covered sooner, while standard compounds may take longer before floor coverings can be installed. As a rule, thicker applications take longer to dry. Always check the specific product guidance for walk-on time and when it is ready to receive the final floor finish. Can self-levelling compound be used outside?

Some self-levelling compounds are suitable for outdoor use, but not all. External areas need products designed to cope with moisture, temperature changes, and freeze-thaw conditions. Even then, many are best for sheltered exterior locations and typically need to be finished with a suitable covering such as tiles or another flooring system. If the area is fully exposed, it is important to choose an exterior-rated compound and follow the correct preparation and protection steps to avoid premature failure.
