Sikagard Woodworm Killer FAQs
What is Sikagard Woodworm Killer?
Sikagard Woodworm Killer is a ready-to-use treatment for eradicating woodworm and protecting against re-infestation. It targets all life stages of wood-boring insects, including larvae, and uses Micro-fine active technology with added insecticide to penetrate deep into the timber rather than sitting at the surface. It is low-solvent and low-odour, which makes it more practical for indoor use compared to traditional solvent-based treatments. It is fast drying, non-flammable and can be overpainted, stained, varnished or polished once dry.
What timbers and surfaces can Sikagard Woodworm Killer be used on?
Sikagard Woodworm Killer is suitable for most internal timber surfaces, including furniture, doors, window frames, floorboards, joists, rafters, roof timbers and other structural or decorative woodwork. It is for internal use only and should not be used externally. Before treating, ensure the timber is clean and free from paint or other surface coatings, which should be removed prior to application. Any badly infected or structurally unsound timber should be replaced with sound material before treatment is applied.
How do I apply Sikagard Woodworm Killer?
Shake the container well before use. Apply by brush, spray or dipping. When brushing or spraying, apply a minimum of two coats – the second coat should go on after the first has soaked in but before it has fully dried. Pay particular attention to end grain, which absorbs the most moisture and is a common entry point for wood-boring insects. Where possible, dip end grains for a minimum of 3 minutes or flood thoroughly where dipping is not practical. Coverage is approximately 1 litre per 3-4m² per coat.
How long does Sikagard Woodworm Killer take to dry?
Drying time is approximately 1 hour under normal conditions. Once fully dry, the treated timber can be overpainted, stained, varnished or polished if required. Drying time may be affected by temperature, humidity and the porosity of the timber – allow adequate drying time between coats and before any finishing work.
Is Sikagard Woodworm Killer safe to use indoors, and are there any precautions I should take?
Sikagard Woodworm Killer is formulated for internal use and is non-flammable and low-odour, making it more suitable for indoor application than traditional solvent-based products. However, it contains permethrin and IPBC as active ingredients, so standard precautions apply:
- Wear suitable gloves and eye protection during application
- Ensure the area is adequately ventilated
- Keep children and pets away from treated areas until the product is fully dry
Read the label and safety data sheet in full before use. Store in original containers at temperatures between +5°C and +30°C and use within 2 years of manufacture.
