Sikabond Rapid DPM FAQs

What is Sikabond Rapid DPM?

Sikabond Rapid DPM is a 1-part, solvent-free, moisture-curing polyurethane resin primer and damp proof membrane for cement-based substrates. It is ready to use and can be applied as a surface conditioner, primer, consolidator for weak screeds, isolator for old adhesive residues or as a damp proof membrane. It is particularly well suited to refurbishment projects where old adhesive residues are present on the sub-floor.

What can Sikabond Rapid DPM be used for?

Sikabond Rapid DPM can be used for priming, consolidating and sealing of absorbent and non-absorbent sub-floors, consolidating weak cement screed and isolating old adhesive residues. It can also be used as a damp proof membrane on sub-floors not under hydrostatic pressure, including over underfloor heating systems. It is not suitable for installation on magnesite or isolating bituminous layers. In areas such as basements where there is no functional DPM preventing hydrostatic water vapour pressure, Sikabond Rapid DPM must only be installed after first applying Sikafloor 81 EpoCem. Some concrete surface sealers can negatively affect adhesion – pre-application trials are recommended on unknown or previously treated substrates.

What substrate preparation is required before applying Sikabond Rapid DPM?

The substrate must be clean, homogeneous and even, and free from grease, dust and loose particles. Remove paint, cement laitance and any other poorly adhering material before application. Concrete and cement screeds must be thoroughly cleaned with an industrial vacuum cleaner. Anhydrite screed and anhydrite flowable screed must be ground and then thoroughly vacuum cleaned. For unknown substrates, compatibility and adhesion tests are recommended before proceeding. Room temperature must be above +10°C and relative air humidity below 75% during application and curing. Ensure adequate ventilation throughout.

What is the maximum moisture content allowed before applying Sikabond Rapid DPM?

For standard applications on cement screed, the maximum moisture content is 4% by the CM method (approximately 6% Tramex). Over underfloor heating, this reduces to 3% CM (approximately 4.5% Tramex). For anhydrite screed the limits are 0.5% CM standard and 0.3% CM over underfloor heating. Where Sikabond Rapid DPM is being used ahead of wood floor installation, note that most wood floor manufacturers specify a maximum substrate moisture content of 2% CM (approximately 2.5% Tramex), which is more restrictive than the DPM’s own limits – always check the wood floor manufacturer’s requirements before proceeding.

How much Sikabond Rapid DPM do I need and how is it applied?

Apply by roller or squeegee. As a surface conditioner or primer, and as an isolator for old adhesive residues, apply 1 coat at 100-200 g/m² (85-170 ml/m²). As a damp proof membrane, apply 2-3 coats at 100-250 g/m² (85-215 ml/m²) per coat, allowing each coat to fully cure before applying the next. Total DPM consumption must be no less than 400 g/m² (340 ml/m²). Each coat is touch dry in approximately 45 minutes at +20°C and 50% relative humidity, with a skinning and laying time of approximately 10-20 minutes. Clean tools immediately after use with Sika Thinner C – cured material can only be removed mechanically.

Is Sikabond Rapid DPM compatible with SikaBond wood floor adhesives?

Yes, Sikabond Rapid DPM is compatible with all SikaBond wood floor adhesives. Always check the substrate moisture content against both Sikabond Rapid DPM’s limits and the requirements of the specific wood floor adhesive and floor covering being used, as wood floor manufacturers typically specify a lower maximum moisture threshold than the DPM product itself. Substrate temperature during application and until full cure must be at least +10°C, and below +20°C where underfloor heating is present.
