How to apply Sika FastFix All Weather
Sika FastFix All Weather is a ready-to-use paving jointing compound designed for patios, paths, pavements, and driveways with light traffic. It’s a popular choice because it requires no mixing, can be applied even in rainy conditions, and sets hard while remaining water permeable.
If you want a long-lasting finish, the key is correct preparation and compaction.
Step 1: Check your joint width and depth
Before you start, make sure your paving joints are suitable. Sika FastFix All Weather is designed for joints over 5mm wide and at least 20mm deep. If your joints are too shallow, the compound may not compact properly, and the results will not last as well over time.
Step 2: Clear out the joints completely
For the compound to work properly, joints need to be free from:
- weeds
- dirt
- debris
- standing water
This is an important step, as anything left inside the joints can stop the compound settling and compacting correctly.
Step 3: Wet the entire area thoroughly
One of the biggest mistakes people make is only wetting the joints. Sika advises wetting the full area, including the slabs themselves, before applying the compound. This helps the product flow into the joints and settle correctly during installation.
Once the area is wet, allow any standing water to drain away before you begin.
Step 4: Open the packaging and work in small sections
Sika FastFix All Weather should be used in small manageable amounts rather than spread across a large area all at once. Once the product is opened, it should be used within 1 hour, so only open what you can realistically install within that time.
Step 5: Brush the compound into the joints
Using a soft broom (or a hand brush for smaller areas), brush the compound across the paving and work it into the joints. Make sure every joint is completely filled. If joints are not fully packed, the final finish can be weaker and more prone to wear.
Sika also advises not to add extra sand and not to try to break up small set lumps, as this can affect the quality of the joint.
Step 6: Compact the joints properly (this is essential)
Compaction is one of the most important parts of the process. Once the compound is in the joints, use a suitable pointing trowel to compact the material thoroughly and smooth the surface to the level you want. This step is essential for strength and durability.
Skipping compaction is one of the main reasons paving joints fail early.
Step 7: Leave it to set (and avoid heavy use too soon)
Sika FastFix All Weather begins to set in 6 to 12 hours in dry conditions above 15°C.
In cooler temperatures between 4°C and 15°C, full curing can take up to 5 days.
If the freshly laid compound becomes flooded with rain, the setting period may be extended. Moisture before full curing can also temporarily soften the product, so it’s best to avoid walking or driving over the area until it has fully set.
Step 8: Clean tools immediately after use
Tools should be cleaned straight away using warm soapy water. Once the compound begins to set, it becomes much harder to remove.
Can Sika FastFix All Weather be reused after opening?
Yes. While the product should ideally be used within 1 hour after opening, unused material can be stored by immersing it in water inside the bucket for up to 1 month. This helps reduce waste and makes it easier to complete larger jobs in stages.
